EBOLA: Museveni Offers Support to DR Congo

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has pledged support to the Democratic Republic of Congo to help contain a severe Ebola outbreak. The strategy focuses on regional treatment centers and enhanced border surveillance rather than border closures.
Why it matters
Effective cross-border cooperation is essential for preventing the regional spread of highly infectious diseases like Ebola in Central Africa.
President Museveni has reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to helping the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) contain its latest Ebola outbreak, proposing the establishment of treatment centres inside eastern Congo to strengthen the regional response and reduce cross-border transmission.
Museveni made the remarks on Wednesday during a meeting at State House in Entebbe with DR Congo’s Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare, Dr. Kamba Mulanda Samuel Roger, who delivered a special message from the Congolese government.
The meeting comes as the DRC battles one of its deadliest Ebola outbreaks in recent years. Since the outbreak was declared in May, the country has recorded 2,473 confirmed cases and 999 deaths, with transmission concentrated in the eastern provinces of Ituri and North Kivu.
