DYFI, SFI activists detained during protest in Coimbatore demanding NEET abolition
Activists from the DYFI and SFI were detained in Coimbatore during a protest demanding the abolition of the NEET medical entrance exam. The demonstrators also called for the resignation of the Union Education Minister and the release of students arrested in New Delhi.
Why it matters
The ongoing protests highlight significant regional tension in India regarding centralized education testing policies.
Members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest in Coimbatore on Wednesday (July 22) demanding the abolition of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and the release of students detained during protests in New Delhi.
Nearly 40 protesters marched from the Coimbatore Railway Station to the BSNL office near the Collectorate, where they launched a sit-in. They raised slogans against the Union government and demanded the immediate withdrawal of NEET and the resignation of the Union Education Minister.
Police intervened to disperse the protest and detained the demonstrators after a brief scuffle. Several protesters were carried away and taken into custody.
