Drug testing college students: IITs, IIMs begin with voluntary urine tests at admission
India's higher education institutions, including IITs and IIMs, have introduced voluntary, confidential drug testing for incoming students. This initiative is part of a broader government strategy to screen 10 lakh students by 2029 to address substance abuse as a growing health concern.

Under directions from the Union government, higher educational institutions across India, starting with IITs and IIMs this year, have begun suggesting that incoming students submit a voluntary urine test for drugs such as amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, benzodiazepines, and phencyclidine (PCP) with their admission paperwork.
According to government officials and admission documents for incoming students, the test is voluntary and is to be taken on the understanding that it will be kept confidential, is anonymised, and will not influence the student’s admission.
