DOTr approves delayed jeepney fare hike to cushion rising fuel costs

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) approved the postponed public utility vehicle fare increase to cushion transport operators from rising fuel costs, paving the way for higher jeepney rates starting Sept. 28. Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez signed off on the adjustment recommended by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), lifting a suspension originally put in place in March.

The decision follows instructions from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to balance the operational viability of public transport providers against the burden placed on daily commuters. Under the revised structure, minimum fares for traditional jeepneys will rise by ₱1 to ₱14 for the first four kilometers, with an additional ₱2 charged for each subsequent kilometer.
