Donegal Castle to host six free National Heritage Week events

Donegal Castle is participating in National Heritage Week by offering free admission and hosting various cultural events. The initiative aims to encourage public engagement with Ireland's built heritage under the theme 'Heritage at Risk'.
Why it matters
It promotes the preservation of historical sites and cultural education within local Irish communities.
Donegal Castle will be one of more than 50 heritage sites offering free admission on Saturday the 15th of August.
There will be several events on at the castle that day, to mark the opening weekend of 2026 National Heritage Week.
A guided tour will tell the story of the castle As Gaelige, with other activities such as a Lego mission challenge for younger visitors to enjoy.
Also, Errigal Handweaver Siobhán Ní Ghallchóir will be at the castle on Monday the 17th of August to provide a weaving workshop which will giving visitors an opportunity to learn about basic weaving and yarn processing - and allow visitors to take home their creations as well.
This year's theme for National Heritage Week is "Heritage at Risk," which encourages visitors to these sites to reflect on the aspects of our heritage that are vulnerable or under threat.
