Cold and flu season is fast-approaching, as the weather starts to turn chillier.

While these conditions are common and generally mild, they can still leave people feeling thoroughly miserable, as well as causing disruption to our lives.

They are hardly the sort of illness that warrant a trip to the GP surgery, but gaining insight into how doctors manage them is vital. We asked medical professionals for their view...

Nobody enjoys having a cold, of course. But GP and TV medic Dr Hilary Jones – known for regular appearances on Good Morning Britain – says we can't always "prevent exposure to viruses, especially in winter when people flock together for warmth indoors". And if symptoms are mild, we probably don't need to worry too much.
