A Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) functionary was arrested by the Perambalur police on Thursday on charges of quarrying stones late at night, beyond the permitted time, in violation of the conditions.
The accused was identified as C. Kumar (55), Perambalur district organiser of the DMK Adi Dravidar Welfare Wing and lessee of a blue metals quarry at Elambalur.
Police sources said they received information in the early hours of Thursday that stones were being quarried at Elambalur hill in violation of the quarrying conditions. Acting on the information, a police team raided the blue metals quarry and found a stone breaker machine being used to quarry stones at the prohibited hour. The vehicle operator fled the spot on noticing the police team.
