A travel report highlights the discrepancy between the idealized social media portrayal of Niagara Falls and the reality of crowded, commercialized tourism. The author notes that the experience is often defined by long lines and obstructed views rather than peaceful nature.
Why it matters
This reflects the growing trend of 'expectation vs. reality' in travel journalism, driven by the influence of curated social media content on tourism.
Niagara Falls is a popular attraction that Business Insider's reporter found less glamorous than it appears on social media and in ads. Joey Hadden/Business Insider I spent three days in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, for the first time in August 2022. The reality of visiting Niagara Falls didn't match my expectations based on social media posts. I spent much of the trip battling crowds, waiting in lines, and standing on my tippy toes. When I reminisce about my boat tour of Niagara Falls , I think of the hot-pink ponchos. I spotted a rainbow from behind a sea of heads in these disposable, mist-shielding cloaks, stretching their arms in an attempt to get an unobstructed shot of the natural wonder. The picture or video may not capture their honest view of the roaring white water, but those who see it on Instagram will never know.
