Periya Kanmai in Ramanathapuram is a major water source for agriculture in the surrounding villages. Though new sluices are nearing completion as part of the ongoing road expansion work, the tank is unable to store water released from the Vaigai during the monsoon as villages remain within the water body.
Further, when Sakkaraikottai Kanmai fills up, excess water is diverted to the sea, resulting in the loss of precious water in a drought-prone district.
The District Administration should remove the dense seemai karuvelam growth inside Periya Kanmai and deepen the tank to increase its storage capacity. Protecting the Kanmai is essential for agriculture, drinking water and the livelihood of thousands of farming families.
