Dindigul police conduct awareness rally on road safety, dangers of substance abuse
Dindigul police organized an awareness rally to address the rising issues of road safety and substance abuse among students. Officials emphasized the need for community involvement and stricter enforcement to curb drug use and reduce traffic accidents.
Why it matters
Public awareness campaigns are essential for addressing public health crises like drug abuse and improving road safety statistics.
Dindigul police on Thursday conducted an anti-drug awareness rally and also highlighted the importance of road safety.
Superintendent of Police S. Jeyakumar flagged off the awareness rally. He said 718 accidents occurred in the district last year alone, with three persons losing their lives in road accidents every two days.
He said road accidents should be avoided and urged the public to strictly adhere to the road safety rules. This practice should begin at the school level, he said, adding that the programme was conducted to raise awareness about both road safety and the dangers of substance abuse.
He said there was an alarming rise in substance use, particularly smoking, consuming alcohol and using ganja among the students. The main objective of the rally was to create awareness and curb the menace, he said.
