Digital driving licences, vehicle registration certificates to be launched in Tamil Nadu on September 15: CM Vijay
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced that digital driving licences and vehicle registration certificates will be available for download starting September 15, 2026. The initiative aims to increase administrative transparency and reduce delays in document issuance.
Why it matters
Digitizing government services is a key step toward reducing corruption and improving efficiency in public administration.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday (September 2, 2026) announced the introduction of a facility to digitally download driving licences and vehicle registration certificates on the day of completion of the driving test and vehicle registration, respectively.
Mr. Vijay said the government would introduce ‘Anywhere Registration/Licensing’ of vehicles in a phased manner for driving licences and vehicle registration. The facility would enable people to obtain licences and certificates from any Regional Transport Office (RTO) in the State.
Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, he said the facility to download the certificates would come into force across the State from September 15. The objective, he said, was to ensure corruption-free and transparent administration and avoid delays in obtaining driving licences and registration certificates.
