Dermatologists warn against steroid creams misuse for fungal infections

The North Andhra Association of Dermatologists has warned of a rise in persistent and difficult-to-treat fungal infections, particularly those caused by Trichophyton indotineae, and urged people to avoid self-medication with steroid-containing combination creams.

The association’s president, Dr. K. Venkata Chalam, said the infections could cause extensive, widespread and intensely itchy lesions with atypical appearances, often leading to misdiagnosis and delayed treatment.

The association advised patients to consult a dermatologist, complete the prescribed treatment and ensure that symptomatic household members, including children, are evaluated and treated where necessary. It also recommended washing infected clothes, towels and bedding separately and avoiding the sharing of personal items.
