Democratic House leader Hakeem Jeffries met with President Donald Trump 's son-in-law Jared Kushner in recent weeks, signalling people close to the president may be preparing for at least one chamber of Congress to flip to Democratic control as the midterm elections loom.
A person familiar with the meeting, who was granted anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter, confirmed the two men had met. The New York Times first reported the detente, which comes as Democrats and Republicans publicly battle for control of Congress ahead of November.
In a statement to CNBC, Jeffries did not directly comment on the meeting with Kushner but said in "every conversation that we have with the Trump administration, we will continue to make it explicitly clear that the affordability crisis is not a hoax and nothing short of transformational policy change is acceptable."
