Democracy being trampled in the streets of Delhi: Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan

Kerala Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan has criticized the Union government for its handling of national-level entrance exam irregularities. He accused the government of suppressing peaceful protests and failing to ensure the credibility of the examination system.
Why it matters
The statement highlights growing political friction regarding the management of national education systems and the right to protest.
The nation is seeing democracy trampled upon in the streets of New Delhi, Kerala’s Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan said on Monday (July 20, 2026).
Mr. Vijayan demanded the Union government to take full responsibility for the lapses in the conduct of national-level entrance exams and act against the culprits. The corruption and ineptitude in the conduct of the examinations have destroyed the credibility of the government machinery.
While such lapses continue to occur, scarcely anything has been done to install a fool-proof system or bring the culprits to book, Mr. Vijayan said. Peaceful protests sprang up across the nation when such a serious issue remained unaddressed. Instead of resolving the matter or holding democratic consultations, the Centre is attempting to mercilessly suppress protests, he said.
