Delhi's Jantar Mantar added as venue for Indian Biennale 2026

The Indian Ministry of Culture has added the Jantar Mantar observatory to the list of venues for the India Biennale 2026. This move aims to transform historical monuments into active cultural spaces while the site's status as a protest venue remains in flux.
Why it matters
The repurposing of historical sites for contemporary art reflects a broader government strategy to blend heritage conservation with modern cultural diplomacy.
Jantar Mantar, one of the five astronomical observatories built by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur in the early 18th century, has been added as a venue for the upcoming India Biennale 2026, organised by the ministry of culture. The India Biennale website was updated on Thursday to reflect the addition. The 108-day art, architecture and design festival, which is to begin on December 4, will take place across 18 other venues in the capital city.
