Delhi protest: Mamata Banerjee and other Trinamool Congress leaders detained from South Avenue bus stop

Mamata Banerjee and other Trinamool Congress leaders were detained by Delhi Police while staging a sit-in at a South Avenue bus stop. The group was attempting to join a protest against the Election Commission of India when they were intercepted.
Why it matters
The detention of high-profile political figures underscores the intensity of the ongoing conflict between opposition parties and the Election Commission.
Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Mamata All India Trinamool Congress (MAITC) chief Mamata Banerjee and other party leaders were detained by the Delhi Police from a bus stop in Delhi’s South Avenue, where they held a dharna.
Ms. Banerjee and other MAITC leaders were scheduled to join today’s protest at Jantar Mantar. However, they were denied permission to leave.
So Ms. Banerjee and others staged a sit in at South Avenue bus stop with placards such as ‘EC looted Bengal’, ‘Save Democracy, Save India.’
Party MPs Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O’ Brien reside in this locality.
