Delhi HC acquits man convicted of sexually assaulting minor

The Delhi High Court has acquitted a man previously convicted of sexually assaulting a minor under the POCSO Act. The court cited material contradictions in the testimonies of the victim and her mother as the basis for creating reasonable doubt.
Why it matters
This case highlights the judicial scrutiny applied to witness testimony in sensitive criminal cases and the legal threshold required for conviction under the POCSO Act.
The Delhi High Court has set aside the conviction and 20-year prison sentence of a man accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl, holding that material contradictions in the testimonies of the victim and her mother created reasonable doubt about the prosecution’s case.
Justice Madhu Jain allowed the appeal filed by the accused, who had been convicted by a trial court in November 2025 under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and various provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
The High Court, in its September 30 judgment, directed that the man be released from jail forthwith if he was not required in any other case.
