'Deeply offensive': Government rebuts Vance’s indentured servants remark
The Indian government has formally criticized US Vice President JD Vance for referring to H-1B visa holders as 'foreign indentured servants.' New Delhi described the remarks as deeply offensive and noted that Indian professionals are vital contributors to the US economy.
Why it matters
The diplomatic friction highlights growing tensions between India and the US regarding immigration policy and the treatment of foreign tech workers.
Following a long period of strained India-US ties, the gloves came off finally as India hit out at US Vice President JD Vance for labelling H-1B visa holders and foreign tech professionals as foreign indentured servants - a characterisation New Delhi slammed as deeply offensive and unwarranted. The scathing response followed the US announcement about the suspension of many tech companies, including several from India, from the PERM Green Card programme.
