Why it matters
Cultural events like these are vital for preserving regional history and traditional performing arts for younger generations.
Students of Raja Annamalai Mandram Tamil Isai College, Chennai, performed the historical dance drama of Angavai Sangavai on the seventh day of the 52nd Tamil Isai Festival at Rajah Muthiah Mandram.
The artistes portrayed and transitioned through different scenes, viz., the happy Parambu kingdom, with people dancing and enjoying its wealth and freedom; Vel Pari leaving his chariot behind for a Mullai (jasmine) creeper; the sisters learning Kavan (traditional sling), among others.
The dance drama captured the emotional depth of the poem written by the sisters in Purananuru (Verse 112), “ Atrait thingal av ven nilavin, enthaiyum udaiyem ” (We had, now we have not), and Avvaiyar’s “ Naada kondro; Kaada kondro ” (a country derives its greatness, virtue and prosperity solely from the goodness and integrity of its people).
