Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center have begun construction on a $1.68 billion specialized cancer hospital in Boston. The facility is scheduled to open in 2031 and will feature 300 beds and advanced patient care technology.
Why it matters
This project represents a major shift in cancer care infrastructure in the U.S., consolidating inpatient services to improve specialized treatment outcomes.
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center held a groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 19 for a $1.68 billion, 300-bed inpatient cancer hospital in Boston's Longwood Medical Area, set to open in 2031, The Boston Globe reported. Construction began in April with the demolition of the former Joslin Diabetes Center building on the site, according to Dana-Farber.The building matters most to patients whose treatment requires a hospital stay, such as surgery, intensive therapy or care for serious complications. Dana-Farber has long treated outpatients in its own clinics while admitting patients to neighboring Brigham and Women's Hospital. That partnership is ending, and Dana-Farber still has about 200 patients admitted at the Brigham, WBUR reported.Over the next several years, Dana-Farber inpatient care will shift in phases to the Beth Israel system before the new hospital opens.
