Dalit leader condemns seer’s remarks
A Dalit leader in Karnataka has condemned recent remarks made by a religious seer regarding caste and religion. He urged religious figures to promote social harmony and adhere to the egalitarian teachings of Basaveshwara.
Why it matters
The discourse reflects ongoing societal debates in India regarding religious rhetoric, caste discrimination, and the preservation of secular social harmony.
Religious leaders and seers should speak responsibly and work to protect peace, equality and harmony in society, said Arjun Bhadre, State convener, Karnataka State Dalit Sangharsha Samiti State.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Bhadre said the samiti strongly condemned the alleged remarks made by Shivakumar Swami of Chidambara Ashram in Bidar district at the Basavadi Sharanara Hindu Samavesha held in the city on September 27.
He said religious leaders should be careful while speaking about caste and religion and should ensure that their words do not hurt the sentiments of any community. Statements that go against Basaveshwara’s message of equality and humanity could create confusion and disturb social harmony, Mr. Bhadre said.
Mr. Bhadre said caste discrimination and untouchability had existed in Indian society for centuries and that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar had fought against such social injustice.
