Culture Card fails to make the final cut in Budget 2027

The Irish government has delayed the introduction of a proposed €100 'Culture Card' for 16-year-olds, citing fiscal constraints in Budget 2027. Officials stated that work on the initiative will continue in the coming months to ensure it is implemented correctly.
Why it matters
The delay reflects the tension between government social policy goals and the reality of tightening fiscal budgets.
The Minister for Finance has said that a €100 Culture Card for 16-year-olds was still being worked on after it did not make the final cut for Budget 2027.
Proposals to introduce the voucher for teenagers to spend on arts, cultural and music venues was mooted during Budget discussions, but was not announced as part of the Budget today.
Speaking on RTÉ's Six One News, Simon Harris said that the Culture Card was still being worked on.
"We're going to get it right, and it will be delivered and developed," he said.
"There's something important in this in trying to get our kids off the phones and get away from the screens and experience culture."
Earlier, the Tánaiste said that Minister for Arts, Media and Culture Patrick O'Donovan will now work with various stakeholders to devise a Culture Card in the months ahead.
