Crown and defence lawyers have made a joint submission to an Ontario court arguing that a teen who pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of a beloved 83-year-old woman outside of her Pickering home in 2025 should face the maximum youth sentence.
During a hearing at an Oshawa court on Tuesday, Justice Lisa Wannamaker heard a joint request from both sides calling for the maximum allowable sentence for first-degree murder under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), which is 10 years. They jointly proposed a lifetime weapons ban, a submission of DNA to a national registry and a forfeiture of evidence seized as part of the Durham Regional Police investigation.
