CPI(M) urges Tamil Nadu government to boycott High-Level Committee on Demographic Changes

The CPI(M) has called on the Tamil Nadu government to boycott a Union government committee investigating demographic changes, citing concerns over its anti-minority agenda. The party argues the committee lacks demographic expertise and is politically motivated.
Why it matters
This highlights ongoing tensions between state governments and the central government regarding data collection, census procedures, and political representation.
The CPI(M) has urged the Tamil Nadu government to boycott the High-Level Committee on Demographic Changes constituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
Strongly condemning the move, CPI(M) State secretary P. Shanmugam said in a statement on Friday that the 35-point questionnaire formulated by this panel exposes the anti-minority agenda of the RSS and the BJP.
The CPI(M) alleged that setting up such an extra-legal committee to gather data while the official Census remains pending demonstrates the BJP’s malicious intent. The party further accused the committee of acting purely with political motives by seeking religion-wise data from states on faith-based school enrollments, land ownership transfers, and religious conversions among tribal populations.
