CPI(M) seeks cancellation of data centre project at Mudasarlova
The CPI(M) has demanded the cancellation of a proposed Google data centre in Visakhapatnam, citing concerns over water scarcity and land allocation. Party leaders argue that the government should prioritize local drinking water needs over industrial projects.
Why it matters
The conflict highlights the tension between industrial development, environmental sustainability, and public resource management.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao on Thursday demanded the cancellation of the proposed Google data centre project in Visakhapatnam, saying the government should respect public opinion and address drinking water needs first.
Mr. Rao, along with other party leaders, inspected the Mudasarlova reservoir and the proposed data centre site. He alleged that the project would increase pressure on the city’s water resources and questioned the government’s decision to supply Godavari water to the data centre while drinking water needs in surrounding areas remained unaddressed.
