CPI(M) area committee member Anas Ali accuses G. Sudhakaran of wilfully targeting him

M.M. Anas Ali, a CPI(M) committee member, has threatened a defamation lawsuit against Independent MLA G. Sudhakaran following allegations linking him to drug rackets. The dispute marks a significant fallout between the two former political allies.
Why it matters
This reflects internal political volatility and the use of public accusations to damage reputations within local Indian political structures.
An area committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] in Alappuzha has accused CPI(M) dissident turned Independent MLA G. Sudhakaran of wilfully targeting him to tarnish his reputation. Demanding the MLA to withdraw his comments linking him to drug rackets, M.M. Anas Ali, Haripad CPI(M) area committee member as well as vice-president of Haripad block panchayat, said he would file a defamation case if Mr. Sudhakaran refused to do so.
On Saturday (September 5, 2026), he broke down at a press conference in Alappuzha he had convened to respond to Mr. Sudhakaran’s allegations. Speaking to The Hindu on Sunday (September 6, 2026), Mr. Ali said he had shared a close relationship with Mr. Sudhakaran for a long time. However, things soured from the time Mr. Ali was appointed by the party to coordinate the Assembly election campaign in the Ambalappuzha constituency.
