Court sentences MTC driver to one-year rigorous imprisonment for pedestrian’s death in Chennai

Nearly nine years after a pedestrian was knocked down by a city bus on Anna Salai and later died of his injuries, a city court has sentenced the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) driver to one-year rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹6,000 on him.
On the night of December 4, 2017, Nomal Gogoi, 42, a native of Assam, was walking from east to west and crossing the road near the Omandurar Government Multi-Speciality Hospital on Anna Salai. At the time, an MTC bus (Route No. 221) proceeding from Kelambakkam towards Central, in the south-north direction, hit him.
