Sharp exchanges marked the Erode Corporation council meeting on Monday (August 31, 2026) over the proposed shifting of the vegetable market to Solar, privatisation of the old bus stand and VOC Park, and the delay in reducing property tax.
The meeting, chaired by Mayor S. Nagarathinam, began after a delay of 1 hour and 10 minutes. Before the proceedings commenced, Zone I chairman and DMK councillor P.K. Palanisamy (Ward 24) wanted the session to begin with the Tamil Thai Vaazhthu . After the State anthem was sung, the meeting commenced in the presence of Commissioner Arpit Jain, Deputy Mayor V. Selvaraj and councillors.
DMK councillor K.S. Sri Aathi (Ward 8) sought to know why a photograph of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had not been displayed in the council hall. The Commissioner said that, as per protocol, the photograph of the incumbent Chief Minister can be displayed.
