Councillors in Coimbatore oppose extension of Corporation contracts without fresh tenders

Councillors at the Coimbatore Corporation Council meeting on Friday, September 11, 2026, questioned the practice of repeatedly extending contracts without inviting fresh tenders, particularly when the works covered by the contracts had not been completed satisfactorily.

The issue came up during a discussion on the contract for removing sand accumulated along road medians and on main roads. East Zone chairman and DMK councillor Ilakkumi Izhamselvi Karthik pointed out that sand continued to remain at several locations and said there was inadequate monitoring of the work. A similar situation prevailed in the South Zone, she said.

Councillors noted that the contracts, which were awarded separately for the five zones, had been extended several times since they were first awarded in August 2025. They questioned the need to continue with the same contractors instead of calling for fresh tenders.
