Sasirekha (35), an independent councillor of Rasipuram Municipality (Ward 12), her husband, V. Sathish (39), and her father-in-law, Venkatachalam (70), met Selvavel. Sathish claimed that he was involved in tourism business and rented helicopters for tourists.
He also promised to provide cars at an affordable price if he invested money in his business. Believing this, Selvavel gave ₹2.49 crore in various instalments. However, the cars were not provided. When Selvavel demanded his money back, Sathish gave three cheques to him, but it bounced without any money.
