Corporation launches waste source segregation drive covering 50,000 homes in South Chennai
The Greater Chennai Corporation has launched a waste segregation awareness campaign targeting 50,000 households in South Chennai. The initiative aims to promote scientific waste management by encouraging residents to separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.
Why it matters
Effective waste management is a critical urban challenge in India, and this program represents a scalable model for improving municipal sanitation.
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) launched a waste segregation drive in the southern region of the city on Saturday, targeting 50,000 households in the first phase.
According to a press release, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has instructed that, in order to facilitate efficient solid waste management, steps must be taken to collect and dispose of waste by properly segregating it at the source into biodegradable, non-biodegradable, sanitary, and hazardous waste.
With the goal of strengthening scientific solid waste management across 15 GCC zones, cleanliness drives and public awareness campaigns are actively being carried out.
As a continuation of these efforts, with the objective of instilling the habit of waste segregation among the public, a 40-day door-to-door awareness program titled “Segregate Waste–Save Tomorrow” was launched on Saturday in the Southern region of GCC.
