Corporation launches mega camp to collect e-waste from residents; over 40 locations to be functional from September 4 to 6
The Corporation of Madurai is launching a three-day e-waste collection drive across 40 locations to encourage responsible disposal of electronic gadgets. The initiative aims to prevent hazardous materials from entering the general waste stream.
Why it matters
Proper e-waste management is essential for environmental protection and reducing the toxic impact of discarded electronics on urban ecosystems.
In a major step forward, the Corporation of Madurai has announced a three-day camp to collect e-waste from residents of Madurai city.
Beginning from September 4 (Friday), the public can drop their e-waste, including old mobile phones, unused chargers, cables, laptops, desktops and other unused electronic gadgets, at over 40 locations across the city.
For the benefit of residents, the Corporation has planned to install large black bins at all the tax collection centres, the five zone offices, Anna Maaligai premises and other key ward offices.
Apart from Health Department officials, the Corporation has also roped in volunteers and activists involved in environmental protection.
Members of Young Indians (Yi), who were organising “Maa Madurai Vizha” at Tamukkam Grounds, have come forward to install the bins and collect e-waste during the three-day camp, Corporation officials said.
