Consumer body in Coimbatore seeks CM’s intervention over rising road levels

Coimbatore Consumer Cause has urged Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to ensure strict implementation of government directions and High Court orders prohibiting an increase in road height during road re-laying works.
In a representation, K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of the organisation, alleged that roads across Tamil Nadu, including in Coimbatore, continued to be re-laid without proper milling, resulting in higher road levels despite government directions to maintain the original Finished Road Level (FRL).
He referred to a public interest litigation (W.P. No. 4248 of 2020), following which the Madras High Court was informed that the Government had directed all local bodies not to increase road height during re-laying. It also cited instructions issued by the Chief Secretary and the Commissioner of Municipal Administration in 2021 directing local bodies to maintain the existing road level while carrying out road improvement works.
