Welcoming the Union government’s decision to integrate Mangaluru railway region with the South Western Railway (SWR), Member of Legislative Council P.V. Mohan on Saturday, however, said the region should not have been made a part of SWR’s Mysuru Division.

“We had been demanding a separate Railway Division for Mangaluru,” Mr. Mohan told reporters here. While separating Mangaluru region from Southern Railway’s Palakkad Division was a welcome move, annexing it to Mysuru Division was against the aspirations of the people of coastal Karnataka, the MLC maintained.

He said: “We (the Congress) are not against either Palakkad or Mysuru; but have been fighting for the rightful share for the Mangaluru region. Denial of a division to Mangaluru will be the poll issue in the coming days. On the Congress coming to power at the Centre, it will take steps to create a separate Division for Mangaluru.”
