Congress questions ₹43 lakh-crore GDP revision, asks Centre to explain methodology

The Congress party has challenged the Indian government's recent GDP revisions, which resulted in a cumulative downward adjustment of ₹43 lakh crore. They are demanding transparency regarding the methodology used and questioning whether the current deflator accurately reflects inflation for the average citizen.
Why it matters
GDP figures are critical indicators of economic health; questioning their accuracy impacts public trust in government fiscal policy and economic management.
The Congress on Thursday (September 3, 2026) posed four questions to the Narendra Modi government over the latest GDP estimates, seeking an explanation for a cumulative downward revision of ₹43 lakh crore in the estimated size of the Indian economy over the past four years and questioning the methodology used to calculate real growth.
In a statement, Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh asked why GDP estimates for all four years since 2022-23 had been revised substantially downwards, what components of the new methodology had driven the changes, who had been consulted in framing it and why the deflator used for calculating real GDP appeared to understate the impact of inflation.
“How has a change in methodology produced such a large drop in the estimated size of the Indian economy?” Mr. Ramesh asked.
