Why it matters
The breach of sensitive medical data poses significant privacy and security risks for patients and donors.
Confidential records containing sensitive medical information of blood donors were allegedly stolen from the blood bank of Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology in Bengaluru after an unidentified person allegedly gained unauthorised entry into the facility.
According to a complaint filed by the in-charge medical officer of the blood bank, a junior lab technologist working in the Transfusion Transmitted Infection (TTI) section had kept confidential records relating to blood donors from May, June, and July in a cupboard in the TTI room around 4 p.m. on September 24.
When staff returned the next morning, they found the cupboard open and discovered that the records had been removed. The stolen documents reportedly contained details relating to HIV, HCV, HBsAg and other blood-transfusion-related tests of donors.
