Expressing concern over the neglect of Periyakulam lake in Gundur village on the outskirts of Tiruchi, environmentalists have urged authorities to complete the restoration works begun a few years ago that envisaged converting the large water body into a flourishing biodiversity enclave.
A project to revive Gundur Periyakulam, considered to be among the biggest lakes in Tiruchi, was inaugurated in 2023 with a plan to clear up to 350 acres that had become overgrown with vegetation. At present, the lake presents a picture of neglect. Local farmers use the lakebed as a grazing ground for their cattle, while the banks are strewn with old footwear, plastic bottles and other solid waste.
