Concentration‑dependent switching between ligand‑like and solvent‑like lipid regulation in a model ion channel
A newly published peer-reviewed study in Nature Communications explores how individual lipid species influence the structure and function of membrane proteins. Using the ion channel SthK, researchers discovered that phosphatidic acid acts as a site-specific allosteric ligand at low concentrations, whereas phosphatidylethanolamine provides purely solvent-like effects.
Why it matters
Understanding the complex biochemical interactions between lipids and membrane proteins helps clarify fundamental cellular mechanics and could inform future drug design.
