Commonwealth Games 2026: Sakshi assures fifth boxing medal for India

Indian boxer Sakshi Chaudhary has secured a spot in the semifinals of the 51kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, guaranteeing at least a bronze medal. Her victory follows a strong performance against Northern Ireland's Caitlin Fryers.
Why it matters
Success in international sporting events is a significant source of national pride and highlights the development of Indian athletes on the global stage.
Sakshi Chaudhary stormed into the women's 51kg semifinals with a commanding victory over Northern Ireland's Caitlin Fryers to assure herself of at least a bronze medal as India continued its impressive run in the boxing ring at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Wednesday (July 29, 2026).
The unanimous decision win made Sakshi the fourth Indian boxer to secure a podium finish at the Games after Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) Priya Ghanghas (60kg) , Preeti Pawar (54kg) and Jadumani Singh (55kg).
Making full use of her height and reach advantage, the Indian, who has moved down from the 54kg weightclass, dictated the contest from the opening bell, keeping Fryers at bay with crisp, accurate jabs and well-timed straight punches.
"Her strategy was to fight from close range, and she kept clinching. Mine was to box from long range, which is my forte," Sakshi told PTI after the bout.
