Why it matters
The case serves as a notable example of criminal activity involving youth and social media-documented illicit purchases.
The police have arrested a college student, who stole nine sovereigns of gold jewellery from a family friend’s house and gifted an expensive motorcycle to her boyfriend after selling the stolen ornaments.
The arrested has been identified as a 19-year-old girl from T.V.K. Nagar near A. Sangampalayam, a second year undergraduate student of a college at Pollachi.
She was arrested based on a complaint lodged by her father’s friend, who is residing at Unjavelampatti near Pollachi. The man complained to the police that the girl visited his house on August 16, after which nine sovereigns of gold jewellery kept in a shelf were missing.
The police registered a case and launched an investigation. When questioned, the girl confessed to the police of having stolen the jewellery from the complainant’s residence and sold them in a jewellery showroom at Pollachi.
