Collector inaugurates TN Green School scheme in Salem
District Collector K. Elambahavath has inaugurated the Tamil Nadu Green School scheme in Salem to promote environmental awareness among students. The program includes the installation of solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and the creation of organic vegetable gardens.
Why it matters
Integrating sustainability education and green infrastructure into schools helps foster long-term environmental stewardship in the younger generation.
District Collector K. Elambahavath launched the Tamil Nadu Green School scheme at the government higher secondary school at Sandhaithanapatti in Nangavalli Panchayat union in Salem on Tuesday (September 8, 2026) and inspected the saplings planted and solar panels installed under the scheme.
The Collector said awareness on protecting the environment should start at the school level, and the Green School scheme aims to do that. “A green school is not just a green campus. It is an initiative to promote green thinking among students and encourage a responsible lifestyle,” he said, and added that the main objective is to enable students to understand the future associated with nature and to travel towards it.
