Coimbatore’s dug-up roads await restoration after pipeline works
Residents of Coimbatore are facing significant travel disruptions due to delays in restoring road surfaces after extensive pipeline-laying works for a city-wide water project. The City Corporation and the Highways Department are currently shifting responsibility for the restoration process.

Several major roads in Coimbatore city have been dug up for pipeline-laying works under the 24x7 drinking water supply project, with residents alleging delays in restoring the road surfaces.
The City Corporation’s ₹646.71-crore 24x7 drinking water project aims to provide uninterrupted water supply to 1.5 lakh household service connections in the 60 wards that formed the city before its 2011 expansion. The project involves laying 73.64 km of feeder mains and 1,813.59 km of distribution pipelines.
As part of the ongoing works, pipelines are being laid on both sides of Trichy Road near Ondipudur flyover; Mettupalayam Road between Avinashilingam College and the ITI; Sathyamangalam Road, between the Ukkadam bus stand and Ramakrishnapuram; and on Avinashi Road between Uppilipalayam and Sitra.
The uneven stretches have caused inconvenience for motorists and pedestrians, particularly two-wheeler riders.
