Coimbatore Corporation urged not to construct Kabaddi court on Kumaraswamy lake bund

The Coimbatore Consumer Cause has urged the Coimbatore Corporation not to proceed with the proposed Kabaddi court at Kumaraswamy lake, alleging that the project would violate the spirit of the Madras High Court’s 2016 order aimed at protecting the Noyyal river lakes.
In a representation to the Corporation Commissioner, the organisation’s secretary, K. Kathirmathiyon, alleged that the Corporation had created new encroachments within the water spread areas through Smart City projects after removing earlier encroachments in compliance with the High Court’s directions.
He said while bund strengthening and walking tracks along the outer periphery could help protect the lakes, recreational facilities should not be developed within the water spread area. He cited facilities such as footpaths, parks, food courts, sports courts and an amphitheatre at Valankulam lake as examples.
