The Coimbatore Corporation has launched a community-driven dengue awareness campaign across 6,959 streets. The initiative involves fever screening, distribution of herbal drinks, and educational activities to encourage residents to prevent mosquito breeding.
Why it matters
Public health initiatives that emphasize community participation are critical for controlling vector-borne diseases in urban environments.
The Coimbatore Corporation will organise dengue-prevention awareness programmes on streets across all the five zones every Saturday. The campaign, dubbed ‘Dengue Awareness Street’, aims to cover 6,959 streets in the city.
Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja launched the campaign at Annapoorna Layout in Sidhapudur on Saturday (September 19).
As part of it, residents were told how empty containers could become breeding sites for dengue-causing mosquitoes. A signature campaign was also organised.
A mobile medical team conducted fever screening, and nilavembu drink was distributed to residents. Senior citizens distributed dengue-awareness pamphlets door-to-door, while children and women participated in a rangoli competition on dengue prevention.
