Coimbatore Corporation plans to end conventional dumping of garden waste at Vellalore
The Coimbatore Corporation is planning to establish a dedicated processing facility for garden waste at the Vellalore dumpyard to prevent fire hazards and reduce waste accumulation. This initiative aims to replace conventional dumping with mechanical processing and recycling.
Why it matters
Improving waste management practices is crucial for urban sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of municipal dumpyards.
The Coimbatore Corporation plans to set up a facility at the Vellalore dumpyard to process garden waste that is currently dumped separately at the site.
Around 10 tonnes of garden waste, including tree branches and other pruning waste, reaches the dumpyard every day. The Corporation is holding preliminary discussions on installing a shredder and other equipment to process the waste and convert it into usable products, officials said.
The move comes in the wake of instances of garden waste catching fire at the dumpyard. On August 23 , a fire had broken out in the garden waste dumped at the site. Officials said nearly 100 tonnes of garden waste had accumulated at the dumpyard at one point.
