The Coimbatore Corporation hosted a 'Kolam' competition to promote awareness of four-way waste segregation among residents. The event also recognized specific wards for their successful sanitation and mosquito-control efforts.
Why it matters
Community-led initiatives are increasingly used by local governments to improve public health and waste management compliance.
The Coimbatore Corporation on Friday (October 2) organised the final of ‘Kolam Star-2026’ at the Semmozhi Poonga campus in Gandhipuram to spread awareness on segregation of waste into four categories.
The final was held among 100 participants selected through ward-level competitions held across the Corporation’s five zones and 100 wards. The participants drew kolams highlighting the segregation of dry waste, wet waste, special waste and sanitary waste.
Jennifer of Ward 40 in the West Zone, Sumithra of Ward 85 and Harini of Ward 96 in the South Zone, and Suganya of Ward 2 and Bhuvaneshwari of Ward 26 in the North Zone won the first five prizes. Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja distributed the prizes. All participants were given saplings.
