Coimbatore Corporation draws up projects to tap ₹3,500-crore Central Finance Commission grant
The Coimbatore Corporation is seeking a ₹3,500-crore grant from the 16th Finance Commission to fund major wastewater management and sewerage infrastructure projects. The initiative includes expanding sewer networks to newly developed areas and upgrading existing treatment plants.

The Coimbatore Corporation has proposed a set of wastewater management projects to be taken up under the Special Infrastructure Component of the 16th Finance Commission, which provides for a ₹3,500-crore grant with 60% of the project cost to be borne by the Centre and the remaining 40% by the State Government and the local body.
Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja said the civic body was planning to implement the ₹824-crore underground sewerage project proposed for Kalapatti, parts of Vilankurichi and parts of Saravanampatti under the grant. The project envisages a 411-km sewer network covering nine wards.
The Corporation is also looking at replacing old sewer pipelines in areas connected to the Nanjundapuram sewage treatment plant (STP). “There are old pipelines in these areas and we are planning to replace them,” Mr. Ravi Teja said.
