Construction workers urge govt. to increase assistance
The AITUC construction workers union has urged the Tamil Nadu government to increase the house construction assistance provided to workers registered with the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board to ₹10 lakh from ₹4 lakh. The compensation provided to the family of a worker who dies in a workplace accident should be raised from ₹8 lakh to ₹20 lakh. Further, maternity assistance for women construction workers should be calculated based on a monthly salary of ₹25,000, resulting in a payment of ₹1.50 lakh (equivalent to six months’ salary).
Regarding educational assistance, a Government Order should be issued to provide ₹5,000 annually for children of the workers studying in classes I to IX and ₹10,000 a year for children studying in classes X to XII. The Welfare Board should bear the entire cost of college education, a press statement from the Union said.
