CNN, MS NOW and Politico plan to sue President Trump jointly for violating their constitutional rights after his administration cut off access to the White House to their journalists, on the basis of his complaint that they were covering him unfairly.
"This ban could not be a more direct assault on the First Amendment nor a more blatant violation of our most fundamental constitutional principles," the lawsuit, set to be filed when federal courts open Monday morning, says.
It cites the news organizations' First Amendment rights not to be punished by the federal government over their speech — in this instance, their news coverage. It also cites the Fifth Amendment rights to due process: the government cannot take away rights or privileges without any warning or process to intercede or appeal the decision.
The White House has not yet responded to NPR's requests for comment.
