Why it matters
This move positions Cloudflare as a central player in modernizing web trust infrastructure against future quantum computing threats.
Cloudflare has announced plans to become a public certificate authority, expanding its role in the web’s trust infrastructure as technology providers prepare for a transition to quantum-resistant security.
The company said on September 29 that its proposed service would issue conventional TLS certificates alongside Merkle Tree Certificates, or MTCs, an emerging approach to authenticating websites without the substantial overhead associated with traditional post-quantum certificate chains.
According to Cloudflare’s announcement , it has agreed to acquire established, publicly trusted root CA key material from GlobalSign and has applied to the Chrome, Apple, Microsoft and Mozilla root programmes. Conventional issuance will follow the relevant acceptance process, while production MTC issuance is targeted for the first quarter of 2027.
